Pots\u00addam, sur\u00adroun\u00added by the river and lakes of the Havel, is built on swam\u00adpy ground with a high ground\u00adwater table. Even today, it is tech\u00adni\u00adcal\u00adly-chal\u00adlen\u00adging buil\u00adding ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1732, the Prus\u00adsi\u00adan King, Fre\u00adde\u00adrick Wil\u00adliam I (1688\u20131740), known as the  \u2018Sol\u00addier King\u2019, wan\u00adted to extend his city of resi\u00addence, Pots\u00addam, to the north. Pes\u00adne,&nbsp;1733)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He was able to secu\u00adre the ser\u00advices of the Dutch master buil\u00adder Jan Bou\u00adman for the plan\u00adning and exe\u00adcu\u00adti\u00adon of the city expan\u00adsi\u00adon, but also wan\u00adted to attract Dutch craft\u00adsmen for the bene\u00adfit of the&nbsp;city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensu\u00adre that they didn\u2019t feel too much like out\u00adsi\u00adders, Fre\u00adde\u00adrick Wil\u00adliam had four blocks with Dutch-style hou\u00adses built from 1733 along with the city expan\u00adsi\u00adon. The craft\u00adsmen were to be encou\u00adra\u00adged to come to the March of Bran\u00adden\u00adburg with a right of abo\u00adde in the\u00adse hou\u00adses and other pri\u00advi\u00adle\u00adges. Suc\u00adcess, howe\u00adver, remain\u00aded modest: in his life\u00adtime, only four Dutch fami\u00adlies moved into the new\u00adly-built quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fol\u00adlo\u00adwing his death, the quarter\u2019s two eastern blocks<em>,<\/em> inclu\u00adding this hou\u00adse, were com\u00adple\u00adted in the peri\u00adod up to 1742 under his son, Fre\u00adde\u00adrick II (the Gre\u00adat), with the rich\u00adly-deco\u00adra\u00adted hou\u00adses on the west side of Bas\u00adsinplatz and in Char\u00adlot\u00adten\u00adstra\u00ad\u00dfe being added&nbsp;later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"488\" height=\"327\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kornblume-potsdam.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Bassinplatz-Gloriette-1942.jpg\" alt=\"Gloriette auf dem Bassinplatz, Potsdam\" class=\"wp-image-75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kornblume-potsdam.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Bassinplatz-Gloriette-1942.jpg 488w, https:\/\/www.kornblume-potsdam.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Bassinplatz-Gloriette-1942-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kornblume-potsdam.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Bassinplatz-Gloriette-1942-200x134.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px\"><figcaption>(2) Glo\u00adri\u00adet\u00adte on Bas\u00adsinplatz around 1942<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Bas\u00adsinplatz, to the south of the quar\u00adter, ori\u00adgi\u00adnal\u00adly fea\u00adtured a lar\u00adge pond into which the buil\u00adding site of the Dutch Quar\u00adter was drai\u00adned. In the midd\u00adle of the basin stood a pavi\u00adli\u00adon, the Glo\u00adri\u00adet\u00adte, on a small island. Over time, the basin sil\u00adted up and was ulti\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly drai\u00adned around 1870. The Glo\u00adri\u00adet\u00adte sur\u00advi\u00adved all the wars but was destroy\u00aded by the Soviets in 1946 to be repla\u00adced by the monu\u00adment which still stands the\u00adre&nbsp;today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The quar\u00adter con\u00adsists of hou\u00adses with dif\u00adfe\u00adrent basic types among which the simp\u00adle, triaxi\u00adal buil\u00addings with the swee\u00adping gab\u00adles are the most striking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kornblume-potsdam.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Giebelh\u00e4user-LTU14097.png\" alt=\"Giebelh\u00e4user im Holl\u00e4ndischen Viertel\" class=\"wp-image-663\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kornblume-potsdam.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Giebelh\u00e4user-LTU14097.png 500w, https:\/\/www.kornblume-potsdam.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Giebelh\u00e4user-LTU14097-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.kornblume-potsdam.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Giebelh\u00e4user-LTU14097-200x133.png 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\"><figcaption>Gab\u00adled hou\u00adses in Mittelstra\u00dfe<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Accor\u00adding to a Dutch\u00adman of my acquain\u00adtance, the fronts of the Dutch ori\u00adgi\u00adnals are nar\u00adrower and more high\u00adly deco\u00adra\u00adted than here in Pots\u00addam. The oldest of the rows of hou\u00adses in the quar\u00adter, the south side of Mit\u00adtel\u00adstra\u00ad\u00dfe loca\u00adted bet\u00adween Fried\u00adrich-Ebert-Stra\u00ad\u00dfe and Ben\u00adkert\u00adstra\u00ad\u00dfe, shows a series of uni\u00adform gab\u00adled hou\u00adses; only later did the faca\u00addes along the streets beco\u00adme more varied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kornblume-potsdam.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Traufenhaus-LTU14092.png\" alt=\"Traufenhaus im Holl\u00e4ndischen Viertel\" class=\"wp-image-668\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kornblume-potsdam.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Traufenhaus-LTU14092.png 500w, https:\/\/www.kornblume-potsdam.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Traufenhaus-LTU14092-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.kornblume-potsdam.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Traufenhaus-LTU14092-200x134.png 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\"><figcaption>Eaved hou\u00adses in Gutenbergstra\u00dfe<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As pre\u00adser\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon orders for secu\u00adlar buil\u00addings only beca\u00adme wide\u00adspread after the turn of the cen\u00adtu\u00adry, many of the hou\u00adses were alte\u00adred in the 19th cen\u00adtu\u00adry: We find level\u00adled gab\u00adles, flo\u00adors added, lar\u00adger win\u00addows and dif\u00adfe\u00adrent shut\u00adters, bal\u00adco\u00adnies, shop win\u00addows. Today, many of the faca\u00addes have been pain\u00adted over in a brick sha\u00adde to con\u00adce\u00adal reno\u00adva\u00adtions car\u00adri\u00aded out in bricks of a dif\u00adfe\u00adrent colour. My hou\u00adse too was remoul\u00added during the Wil\u00adhel\u00admi\u00adan era; this can be seen in the pic\u00adtures below, and the door recalls it to this day. With the excep\u00adti\u00adon of two (Guten\u00adberg\u00adstra\u00ad\u00dfe 69 and 81), they have all been rebuilt.
